Welcome to Kindergarten!
I am Mrs. Mayagoitia, “Mrs. Maya” the Saint Finbar kindergarten teacher. Our program is a faith based, developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with California and Archdiocesan core standards.
In the first trimester, we focus on building community while learning the new schedules and routines of our full-day program. During the opening weeks of school, students will be introduced to an enriching curriculum of religion, english language arts (ELA), the Writing to Read lab, math, social studies, music, the art lab, spanish, p.e., science, and library time; and they will participate in Mass and “all school“ activities. In addition, kindergarten students are administered the STAR tests as a tool for assessment.
The kindergarten ELA curriculum is comprised of two major parts; the Reading Street literacy program and the Writing to Read (WTR) program. Students will not only be immersed in literature and literacy based on the core standards, but they will also learn to incorporate emerging literacy skills with technology in the WTR lab.
Math standards in kindergarten call for a mastery of numerals 1 through 30, along with an understanding (counting by tens) of numbers 1 to 100. In class we practice math skills with a multitude of manipulatives along with the Harcourt, California HSP, math series.
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday and will normally consist of a practice page related to a concept introduced or reviewed in class that day. In addition, parents are encouraged to read to their kindergartner for 15 to 20 minutes every evening.
By the second trimester, kindergarten students are in full swing! Saint Finbar School holds parent teacher conferences right before Thanksgiving break. December brings the Advent Season and our focus turns to waiting for the birth of Jesus and our Christmas Program. Upon our return from Christmas break, we hunker down and recommit ourselves to a new year of learning.
The third trimester begins in March. Kindergarten students experience the Lenten walk with Jesus and participate in Stations of the Cross along with the Saint Finbar student body. When we return from Easter break our focus returns to mastering curriculum standards.
The month of May is a busy one for kindergarten families. This is our grade’s assigned month to staff the morning valet, and coordinate the May student raffle fundraiser. May also brings the Saint Finbar School and Parish Fiesta, and the final student body Mass of the year.
June brings the wrap up of curriculum activities, ending with Kindergarten Closing Ceremonies!
